MTV’s annual Video Music Awards took place yesterday night in New York at the famous Madison Square Gardens. From Drake pledging his love to Rihanna to Beyonce’s 15 minute performance (YUP 1-5), it was definitely a night to remember. Here are our favourite moments:
Yesterday was definitely Rihanna’s night. The Bajan songstress was presented with the highly coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Her rumoured beau, Drake, presented the award to her, talking about how much he looks up to Rih Rih, and even admitting that he has been in love with her since he was 22 years old. Talk about cuteness overload.
Rihanna also delivered 4 outstanding performances, all with different themes. Our favourite was her second performance which had a reggae/clubbing vibe to it, incorporating what looked like about 100 plus people on the stage. See some of her performances below.
2. Kanye West
Kanye West made a special appearance, and presented his new Fade video featuring Teyana Taylor , which had a cool flash dance feel to it. Two words… BODY GOALS! In true Kanye style, he gave a mini speech, giving a couple of special shout outs. He also spoke about the disenfranchisement of black people. The best moment for us had to be when he shouted out Amber Rose.. saying “I see you Amber!” After their long standing beef, the exes seem to be cordial and were even spotted chatting during the show.
See Kanye’s speech and the Fade video.

Beyonce gave us a taste of what everyone has been enjoying on the Formation tour, by doing a fifteen minute set, featuring some of the favourite tracks from her highly acclaimed Lemonade visual album. Bey reminded us why she is the best, killing her performance in a way only she can. The diva also won big, going home with 8 trophies including Video of the Year. See her epic performance below.
Future and his fine self took us to the club, performing Fuck Up Some Commas. Olympic favourite, Michael Phelps, presented the rapper, commenting on how much of a fan he is of Future’s music.
5. Britney Spears
Pop star, Britney Spears, made a much anticipated VMA comeback after 9 years. Although it was clear to everyone and their momma that she was lip synching, lets face it…she’s still Britney…bitch.
6. Ariana Grande and Nicki Manaj
Ariana Grande took fitness to a whole other level, with a Soul Cycle themed performance of her song featuring Nicki Minaj, Side to Side. Although she sounded a little winded at some points, overall, the songstress showed us that she can SANG. Nicki and her tight ass body suit joined her on stage towards the end of the performance.
7. Nick Jonas
We are loving this RnB/Pop side to Nick Jonas. Reminds us of a non two-stepping Justin Timberlake. Well kinda. The pop crooner performed his hit, Bacon, with Ty Dolla $ign.
